Lap the Coast: Outdoor Pools and Rock Pools Perfect for Swimming on the Sunshine Coast
From Mooloolaba's heated outdoor lanes to the ancient basalt shelves at Coolum, the Sunshine Coast has some of Queensland's best open-air lap swimming, and most locals haven't tried half of them.
How we reported this

Mid-winter on the Sunshine Coast and the outdoor swimming options are better than most Australians realise. Water temperatures at local rock pools are sitting around 19 to 21 degrees Celsius this week, cool enough to be bracing, warm enough to complete a solid 30-minute session without losing feeling in your fingers. That combination, fitness researchers increasingly argue, is close to ideal for cardiovascular training.
The timing matters. With gym memberships averaging $65 to $80 a month across the Sunshine Coast region, and household budgets under sustained pressure from the broader property and cost-of-living squeeze, free and low-cost outdoor fitness options are drawing renewed interest. Sunshine Coast Council's active recreation data from its 2025-26 annual survey showed that open water and outdoor pool usage rose 14 percent year-on-year across the region, outpacing growth at indoor aquatic centres.
Where to Actually Swim Laps Outdoors
Mooloolaba Esplanade's Spit rock pool is the most underutilised serious lap venue on the coast. Sitting just north of the Mooloolaba SLSC clubhouse on The Esplanade, the council-maintained pool is roughly 25 metres end to end at high tide and offers relatively protected water even when a south-easterly chop cuts across the open beach. Entry is free. Serious swimmers typically arrive between 6 and 7:30 am before the pool fills with children and casual swimmers by mid-morning.
Further north, the rock shelf at Coolum Beach, accessed via the coastal path off David Low Way near the surf club carpark, provides a natural channel that experienced swimmers use for open-water laps at low tide. It requires more judgment about conditions than a built pool, but on calm winter mornings the water clarity is exceptional and the basalt shelf drops to between 1.2 and 1.8 metres through the channel, making it genuinely workable for fitness swimming. Coolum Surf Life Saving Club patrols the adjacent beach on weekends from 8 am.
For swimmers who want lane ropes and a clock, the Kawana Aquatic Centre on Sportsmans Parade, Bokarina, operates a 50-metre outdoor pool that remains open year-round. A casual adult lap swim costs $7.50 as of July 2026. The centre is run under contract by the Sunshine Coast Council and offers early morning squad sessions through Swim Sunshine Coast, the regional club that affiliates with Swimming Queensland.
The Health Case for Cold(ish) Water
University of the Sunshine Coast's health research unit, based at the Sippy Downs campus, has been examining the relationship between regular outdoor swimming and stress biomarkers as part of a broader community wellness study running through to December 2026. While that research is ongoing, the existing evidence base from European and Australian studies points consistently in one direction: outdoor swimming, even at moderate temperatures, produces measurable reductions in cortisol levels and improvements in self-reported mood across sessions of 20 minutes or more.
The Noosa National Park coastal track also deserves mention here, not as a swim destination itself but as a corridor to several sheltered coves, Dolphin Point and Tea Tree Bay among them, where the rock shelf geometry allows fit, experienced swimmers to complete genuine lap circuits in calm conditions. Noosa National Park is managed by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, and the coves are accessible year-round without entry fees, though the 2.7-kilometre walk from the Noosa Heads car park on Park Road means this is firmly in the committed-swimmer category.
Before heading out, a few practical points. Sunshine Coast Council publishes a beach conditions report updated each morning at sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au, worth checking before any rock pool session after overnight rain, when runoff can affect water quality. Anyone returning to regular swimming after a break, or managing a cardiovascular or musculoskeletal condition, should get clearance from a GP or exercise physiologist before starting an outdoor lap program. The council's Active and Healthy program, which operates out of community centres including the Nambour Hub on Bury Street, can provide referrals to local accredited exercise professionals at no cost for eligible residents.
The Sunshine Coast's winter swimming window, roughly May through August, when crowds are thin and the water is clean, is the best-kept fitness secret on the eastern seaboard. It closes faster than people expect.
