Local Clubs Thriving as They Build Community on the Sunshine Coast
Membership numbers and volunteer hours have climbed sharply at clubs across the region this year.

Participation at Sunshine Coast sports clubs rose 28 percent between January and June 2026, according to figures released by the regional sports council last week.
The increase comes as families seek regular in-person activities after two years of disrupted seasons. Clubs report that new members cite both fitness goals and a desire to meet neighbours, with many signing up through school and workplace referral programs.
Venues report packed schedules
At Kawana Sports Precinct on Kawana Way, the junior rugby league program added three new teams in the under-12 and under-14 divisions this winter. The same facility now hosts a Wednesday night social netball competition that draws 180 players, many of them shift workers from the nearby hospital and university.
Further north, the Maroochydore Cricket Club on Duporth Avenue launched a mixed-gender T20 league in May that already has 12 teams registered. The club also opened its grounds for a monthly community barbecue that attracted 320 residents on 4 July, with proceeds directed to equipment upgrades.
Both sites run free introductory sessions on the first Saturday of each month. Annual junior membership fees remain at $65, while adult social memberships cost $95, prices unchanged since 2023.

Clubs will hold open registration days on 18 and 19 July at the Kawana Sports Precinct main oval and at the Maroochydore clubrooms. Interested players can arrive between 9 a.m. and midday to meet coaches, complete paperwork and receive a free training shirt.
