Sunshine Coast clubs thrive and build community through local sport
Rising participation at clubs from Maroochydore to Caloundra shows how organised sport strengthens neighbourhood ties on the Sunshine Coast.
How we reported this

Membership numbers at Sunshine Coast soccer and rugby clubs rose 28 percent between January and June 2026, according to registration data from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council.
The increase comes as families seek regular activities that connect residents beyond the beachfront suburbs, especially after the World Cup quarter-finals drew larger television audiences in the region.
Programs at specific venues drive growth
At the Kawana Sports Complex on Kawana Way, the Kawana Junior Soccer Club added three new under-12 teams this season after opening its fields for free community training sessions every Tuesday evening. Further north, the Buderim Warriors Rugby Club on Buderim Mountain Road launched a walking-netball group that now meets three times a week and draws residents from both Buderim and nearby Sippy Downs.
These two sites sit within five kilometres of each other yet serve different postcodes, allowing the clubs to share coaching resources while keeping registration lists separate.
Numbers show sustained local investment
Council figures released last week list 4,872 active players across the two codes, up from 3,806 at the same point in 2025. Average seasonal fees remain at $145 for juniors and $210 for seniors, with the council subsidising $40 per player for households holding a current rates notice.
Next month the clubs will hold open registration days at both venues on 26 July, with details posted on the council website and at the Maroochydore Library branch. Residents can also contact the clubs directly to arrange a single-session trial before committing to the full season.
