Coastal pathway extension draws daily walkers on the Sunshine Coast
Residents are embracing the new 3km stretch connecting key beachside suburbs for safer, scenic outings.

The Sunshine Coast Council completed the latest 3km section of the Coastal Pathway on July 5, running from the Maroochy River mouth in Maroochydore to the surf club at Alexandra Headland.
Winter temperatures near 20 degrees have pushed more people outdoors for exercise rather than indoor gym sessions, and the new sealed surface removes the previous gravel sections that deterred families with prams and cyclists.
Daily users now pass the upgraded seating at Mooloolaba Beach Park before reaching the entrance to the Sunshine Coast Regional Gallery, where a small kiosk sells takeaway coffee. Further along the route, the path skirts the edge of Cotton Tree Park, giving direct access to the weekly produce stalls that operate on Saturday mornings.
Usage data shows clear shift
Council counters recorded 1,200 people on the path in the first full week after opening, a 35 percent increase from the same period last year. The extension cost $4.2 million and includes solar lighting along the entire length, allowing safe use until 9pm.
Local running groups have already moved their Tuesday evening sessions to the new section, starting at the Maroochydore Lifeguard Tower and finishing at the Alexandra Headland car park. Several cafes along Aerodrome Road report higher takeaway sales from walkers who detour inland for breakfast.
Active Sunshine Coast will launch free guided walks every Sunday at 7am from the Cotton Tree boat ramp starting July 19. Maps and current conditions are listed on the council website.
